"I worked at Lake View Presbyterian Church from July 7, 2020 to November 14, 2021, during some of the highs and lows of the pandemic and my own personal life. It was miserable and weird and endless, but when I was there I would often spend hours alone in the building, covering for a pastor who was all but checked out as her retirement slowly approached. She was genuinely one of the most unpleasant people I ever met, but over the year or so I was there, this wishy-washy workload encouraged many fruitful experiments with an array of tape players brought from home, lavalier microphones amplified through the in-house PA system, church appliances and electronics, improvisational sessions on the sanctuary piano, and explorations of various silences and objects around the building, among other things.
The following 20 minutes were recorded 100% on-site at LVPC and Temple Sholom, the synagogue where I act as a part-time sound engineer, and tell an emotional story which I believe succinctly reflects the experience I have/had at both of these strange places. I tried to mix an ethereal, spiritual approach to tactile sound with a somber, melancholy strain of rudimentary neo-classical, approaching elements used in church worship with a secular reverence. The tape, which primarily operates as a series of sound collages, ends with a recording of the church pianist, John Erickson, performing a rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" on July 4, 2021, when the church re-opened to its congregation for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic."
