RE / VEIDRIK / Odious Wretch Despite the provocative subject matter this is actually a rather nuanced album, and quite engaging. The POV of the artist is murky and detached and your note about this being a documentary definitely makes sense.

Overall it leaves me with an uncomfortable / uncertain feeling and I have to imagine that was the intent. Despite that, I do want to listen to it again and learn more about the subject matter. Favorite track: I Was Ready to Die.

about

[AE-3]

Abu Sayyaf (ah-boo sah-yahf) is a militant Islamist group based in and across the islands of the Southern Phillipines, where for more than four decades Moro groups have been engaged in combat for an independent caliphate in the country. The name of the group is derived from the Arabic "abu" (Arabic: أبو‎) ("father of"), and "sayyaf"(Arabic: سيّاف‎) ("swordsmith")

Since its inception in 1991, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, assassinations and extortion in what they describe as their fight for an independent Islamic province in the Philippines.

Although the group has engaged in kidnapping hostages to be exchanged for ransom for many years, this means of funding grew dramatically beginning in 2014, providing much needed revenue for the group's rapid growth.

Most of the Abu Sayyaf victims have been Filipinos. However, non-Filipinos have also been taken hostage for large ransom payment demands. Westerners, especially Americans, have been targeted for political and racial reasons.

The United States Department of State has classified the group as a terrorist group by adding it to the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. In 2002, fighting Abu Sayyaf became a mission of the American military's “Operation Enduring Freedom” and part of the U.S. War on Terror.

A spokesman for the Abu Sayyaf has stated that, "We have been trying hard to get an American because they think we are afraid of them."

He added, "We want to fight the American people."
